One Look or Two? Should You Have a Separate Reception Outfit?

Your wedding day is all about you and your partner. You want it to be the best day of your life so far, and to feel perfect in every way. Your comfort on that day will play a big part in that.

Lots of couples are now choosing to have a separate outfit to change into for their reception for a variety of reasons. They may have found two outfits that they love equally as much and want to give both time on their special day. Others would rather change into a more comfortable outfit for their reception, especially if they are expecting to be dancing all night long.

Wedding dresses, especially, can be very heavy to wear and oftentimes a little restricting. Dress-wearers tend to want to look their absolute best and may opt to wear shape-wear under their dresses. Your ceremony clothing may make you look and feel like royalty, but once you sit down to eat, drink or dance – you may find that you’d rather something with a little give.

Your reception outfit could be an adapted version of your wedding outfit. For example, your wedding dress could be tailored to have a removable top skirt – so that it can be transformed into a shorter skirted dress for your evening party. A suit can equally be adapted by having removable sleeves/half legs. A good tailor will be able to recommend what would work best with your outfit and achieve a comfort level that you’re happy with whilst maintaining your stunning look.

Another option that you could choose would be to buy an entirely different outfit for your evening reception. This outfit could be literally anything; from a fantasy-themed cosplay to a cute little cocktail dress. Taking a short break to retreat to a private space with your new spouse and change into your reception outfits also gives you an additional “entrance” to surprise your guests with your new fit.

Here are some other tips for choosing a reception outfit for your wedding;

💃 1. Think About Comfort

You will be moving about a lot at your reception, greeting guests, catching up, dancing, eating and giving speeches – choose an outfit that freely allows you to move and enjoy your moment.

👗 2. Choose a Style That Matches the Vibe

Whether you’ve chosen a rustic setting for your wedding or a super modern, chic palace – try to match your reception outfit to the style you’ve chosen.

📸 3. Plan a Quick & Easy Change

If your reception outfit requires assistance to get into (or out of) consider pre-arranging a certain time that you can borrow one of the wedding party to help you change.

📸 4. Coordinate with Your Photographer

Tip your photographer off in advance that there will be a second look. This way, they can capture both your entrance in your new glad rags and also your guests’ reaction to your fantastic look!

🕺 5. Match the Outfit to Your Reception Activities

If you have certain activities planned for your reception (swimming, hiking, sparklers, dancing etc) ensure your outfit will be suitable for whatever fun’s ahead!

👫 6. Make It a Duo Moment

For a little added whimsy, you could plan your reception outfit with your partner! Matching trainers, embroidered capes with your wedding date, matching colours etc, let your imagination go wild!
