Laura & James’s Wedding at Shustoke Barn, Warwickshire

Some weddings are memorable for the little details, and Laura and James’s spring wedding at Shustoke Barn near Coleshill had plenty of them. From personalised tea mugs during bridal preparations to James arriving in a blue McLaren and a first dance to a song from Toy Story, there was so much personality throughout their day.

The weather was also a pleasant surprise. We’d expected a fairly overcast day, but the sunshine made an appearance and gave me some lovely opportunities for photographs around the barn.

A Morning of Tea, Laughter and Bridal Preparations

I started my photography at Laura’s parents’ house, where she was getting ready with her bridesmaids and family.

There was plenty happening, but one little detail that caught my eye was the personalised glass mugs everyone had, each showing their name and role in the wedding. They were being put to good use with a constant supply of tea!

Laura was understandably a little nervous, but she was also excited. She’d told me that she wanted her wedding photographs to be as natural as possible, capturing the things happening around her rather than spending the day posing.

That suited her preparations perfectly. I photographed the finishing touches, the bridesmaids helping one another and the moments between Laura and her family before it was time to leave.

Two Very Different Wedding Cars

I then made my way to Shustoke Barn to meet James and his groomsmen.

James had arrived with his best man in a rather impressive blue McLaren, which certainly deserved a few photographs! The boys were enjoying a drink and greeting guests, so I captured a mixture of relaxed portraits and natural shots as everyone arrived.

Laura’s arrival couldn’t have been more different.

She travelled to the barn with her father in a beautifully restored vintage car. I photographed them together before she stepped out, making sure to capture those final moments before the ceremony.

Having two such different cars added a fun touch to the morning photographs.

The Wedding Ceremony Inside Shustoke Barn

The ceremony took place inside the main barn, with its exposed brickwork, high ceilings and beautiful natural character.

One of the things I particularly enjoy about photographing weddings at Shustoke Barn is how the ceremony space allows me to capture both the couple and their guests without needing to interrupt anything.

As Laura walked down the aisle, I concentrated on James’s reaction and the moments between them as they exchanged their vows.

The warm tones of the brickwork also provided a lovely backdrop for their ceremony photographs, giving the images a timeless feel without needing anything elaborate.

Making the Most of Shustoke Barn for Photographs

After the ceremony, everyone gathered in the courtyard for confetti and family photographs.

Once we’d finished the groups, I took Laura and James for a short walk around the venue.

I particularly like the combination of the red-brick buildings, archways and open countryside at Shustoke Barn. They give me different backgrounds to work with without taking couples too far away from their guests.

Laura and James wanted relaxed photographs, so we kept things simple, with a little direction from me when needed.

Later in the day, the sunshine gave us another opportunity to step outside for some portraits. The softer evening light worked beautifully against the brickwork, and I’m so pleased we made time for those extra photographs.

Speeches, Toy Story and a Very Busy Dance Floor

Back inside, the speeches gave me plenty to photograph.

Laura’s father spoke during the wedding breakfast, followed later by James and his best man. There were some lovely reactions around the room, particularly when the stories and jokes started!

The evening celebrations began with the cake cutting, followed by Laura and James’s first dance to You’ve Got a Friend in Me from Toy Story.

It was such a fun and personal choice of song, and one that suited them perfectly.

Once the dancing got underway, the floor filled up quickly. There were guests of all ages joining in, and James certainly seemed determined to make the most of it!

I really enjoyed photographing the movement, laughter and energy as the evening celebrations continued.

Why I Enjoy Photographing Weddings at Shustoke Barn

Laura and James’s wedding was a lovely reminder of why I enjoy returning to Shustoke Barn.

As a photographer, I particularly appreciate the variety of locations. The main barn gives wedding ceremonies a warm, characterful setting, while the courtyard and surrounding countryside are ideal for family photographs and couple portraits.

Knowing the venue also helps me work with changing light and weather, which was particularly useful on Laura and James’s spring wedding day.

But it was the personal touches that made this wedding stand out for me: the mugs at Laura’s parents’ house, the contrasting wedding cars, the Toy Story first dance and the brilliant atmosphere on the dance floor.

Laura and James, thank you for choosing me to photograph your wedding. It was a pleasure being part of your day, and I wish you both every happiness together!
