How to Deal With Anxiety On Your Wedding Day
[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]You’ve been planning this day for months. You have left no stone unturned. Everything is absolutely perfect, and is expected to go off without any problems. From the beautiful flowers and decorations to the cake, and the perfect song lined up to dance with your new spouse, everything is in place.
But, if you’re feeling anxious, everything can feel like a disaster on your wedding day!
Everyone has heard of “wedding day jitters” or even cold feet. But, feeling anxious on your wedding day is different, and can be far more serious.
You might be worried about something like messing up your vows. Or, maybe the idea of everyone staring at you as you walk down the aisle causes you to tremble.
Whatever is making you anxious about your big day, you can handle it! There are plenty of ways to combat anxiety on your wedding day. When you learn some effective management techniques, you can spend more time focusing on how perfect the day really is, rather than worrying about the little things.
With that in mind, let’s look at a few practical ways you can beat anxiety on your big day.
Understand That It’s Totally Normal
Just because you’re dealing with anxiety on your wedding day doesn’t mean there is something “wrong” with you. Even if it’s more than just cold feet, it’s okay to feel anxious.
Not only is it something you’ve never done before, but it is a life-changing event. Everyone will be looking at you, and that’s where their focus will remain for the whole ceremony. For some people, it can feel like there is a lot of pressure. For others, realizing that everything will be different from that moment forward is a lot to handle all at once.
No matter what is triggering your anxiety, remind yourself that it’s normal. Simply doing that can help you to feel more at ease.
Feel Empowered Knowing It’s Your Day
You’ve probably heard your wedding day called “your big day” or “your special day”, and those are both very true! The day is, and should be, all about you and your partner.
But, if that leaves you feeling as though there is a lot of pressure on your shoulders, turn it around! Instead of feeling anxious about being in control, relish in it. It’s your day, so you’re in charge. By telling yourself that you’re in control of the day, it can help you to stay calm. Typically, it’s when we feel that things are out of our control that it’s easier to be anxious.
Try focusing on all of the things you can control. For example, when you’re working with your wedding photographer, if you have a shot or two that you really want them to capture, or a specific location you want your picture taken, talk to them about it!
Take Breaks
One of the best things you can do to keep from feeling overwhelmed is to take a break or two throughout the day. While the ceremony and certain parts of the reception are important, there will undoubtedly be a few lulls in the day where you can take a break and give yourself some alone time.
Even just a few minutes away from the crowd can make a big difference in how you feel. When you do get some time away, take advantage of it by practicing a few deep breathing exercises. Inhale deeply for ten seconds, then let it out slowly.
It’s also a good time to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is about focusing on your breath and energy in the present moment. You can let thoughts come and go freely without holding onto them. A few minutes of mindfulness can help you to feel relaxed while letting go of your worries.
Talk to Your Partner
If you’re already feeling anxious a few days before your wedding, talk to your partner about it. They can’t help you if they don’t know what you’re going through. And, chances are, they will be happy to support you in whatever way they can.
Have a talk about which situations you think will make you the most anxious. If your partner feels more comfortable about those situations, agree to let them take the lead. Have them do most of the talking throughout the day when it comes to making small-talk with your guests.
Additionally, it’s a good idea to have some kind of “code word” or a secret signal the two of you can use throughout the day. If you’re starting to feel anxious at any point, you can show your partner that signal, and they will know that you need a break.
Don’t leave your partner in the dark when it comes to how you’re feeling. This is the start of your lives together. Starting things out with honesty and vulnerability is a great way to set the tone for the beginning of your marriage and work together to come up with a positive solution.
Finding Peace On Your Wedding Day
If you’re feeling anxious on your big day, try not to worry too much about those feelings. They are normal, and there are things you can do to manage them throughout the day.
The best thing you can do is to get a handle on what is causing your anxiety ahead of time. When you know your triggers, you can do your best to avoid them on your big day. But, if those anxious thoughts still start to creep up, keep some of these tips in mind.
The more you are able to put these ideas in place on your special day, the more you will actually be able to enjoy it and find peace. Remember, you’re not alone, you’re in control, and you have a built-in support system when it comes to your partner. Repeat those things to yourself whenever you start to feel overwhelmed by the day, and take a few deep breaths. Work on enjoying the moment now, so you can look back on it in 20 years and feel the same joy and peace. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
