Hello lovely parents! It’s Emma here, and if you’re reading this, you might be considering capturing those fleeting, precious early moments of your newborn’s life. It’s an incredibly special time, but I also know, as a mum myself, that bringing a tiny new human into the world comes with a whole new layer of concerns – especially when thinking about venturing out for something like a photoshoot.
My journey into newborn photography, now approaching a decade, wasn’t just about picking up a camera. It was deeply rooted in my previous experience as a qualified newborn and baby nursery nurse, followed by years in dental nursing. These roles instilled in me an unwavering commitment to safety, hygiene, and patient comfort, skills that are absolutely paramount when working with the most vulnerable of clients: your precious baby.
I’ve lost count of how many beautiful newborns I’ve had the privilege to photograph, each one teaching me more about patience, adaptability, and the sheer miracle of new life. This extensive background, coupled with my fully clear DBS check status and my own experiences as a mother to three wonderful children, has shaped my entire approach. You’ll find me to be ultra-relaxed, patient, and naturally comfortable with newborns – a calming presence during what can sometimes feel like a whirlwind.
My ultimate goal is for your photoshoot to be a joyful, stress-free experience, a true celebration of your new family. And that starts with making sure both your newborn and you, their incredible parents, feel completely at ease.
Your Newborn’s Wellbeing: Safety and Comfort Above All Else
When your tiny bundle of joy arrives at my studio, their safety and comfort are my absolute non-negotiables. Everything, from the moment you step through the door until you leave, is meticulously planned around their needs.
1. A Soothing, Safe Environment: Imagine stepping into a haven designed purely for your baby’s comfort. My studio is maintained at a perfectly elevated, cosy temperature, ensuring your newborn is snug and warm, even when dressed in delicate outfits or lighter linens. This warmth is vital, as newborns struggle to regulate their body temperature. It helps them feel secure, mimicking the warmth of the womb, and encourages deep, peaceful sleep – ideal for those serene shots.
2. Patience is Paramount – We Work at Baby’s Pace: One of the most crucial lessons I’ve learned over nearly a decade of newborn photography is the absolute necessity of patience. Babies operate on their own schedule, and I embrace that entirely. There’s no rush, no pressure, and plenty of breaks built into every session. Whether it’s for a cuddle, a quick stretch, or just some quiet time, your baby dictates the flow.
3. Honouring Your Newborn’s Cues: My extensive experience has taught me to read a newborn’s subtle cues. We will never, ever force a pose or an image. If a baby is unsettled, crying, or simply doesn’t want to be in a particular position, we stop immediately. My approach is all about gently guiding them into natural, comfortable positions that they settle into willingly. Your baby’s delicate body and developing joints are handled with the utmost care, and I constantly monitor their breathing, colour, and comfort throughout the session.
4. Feeding and Changing on Demand: Forget the clock! Breast and bottle feeding happens exactly when your newborn needs it. These feeding times are not only essential for your baby’s wellbeing but also provide wonderful opportunities for you to bond, relax, and for me to capture some beautiful, candid moments. Nappy changes? Absolutely expected and handled without a moment’s hesitation or complaint. As a mum of three, I’m entirely unfazed by any little milk spills or nappy accidents. My studio is equipped for such moments, and I’m ready with spare tops – it’s just part of the beautiful chaos of newborn life!
5. You’re in Charge – Always: Despite my years of experience, my mummies are always in charge. I encourage you to be involved in the posing process, offering your feedback and preferences. Your comfort and confidence in how your baby is being handled are paramount. This collaboration ensures we create images you adore, knowing your precious one was always safe and content
The Mother’s Wellbeing: A Relaxing Respite for You
1. Empathy: I remember those first days and weeks as a new mum vividly. The exhaustion, the joy, the overwhelming love, and sometimes, the sheer bewilderment of what to bring and what to expect when leaving the house. As a mum who has been there, done that, three times over, my studio is designed to be a haven for you too.
A Stress-Free Arrival: No need to battle for parking or lug heavy car seats across busy car parks. You can park safely and easily on my private driveway, just steps from the studio door. Regarding what to bring, I understand the ‘just in case’ pile. Please feel free to bring whatever you feel you need, and you can either leave items in your car (if you’re unsure you’ll need them) or bring everything in – there’s no judgment here! My goal is to remove every possible point of stress.
2. Your First Day Out: A Moment to Breathe: For many first-time mums, this photoshoot is often one of your very first outings with your newborn. It can feel daunting, exciting, and perhaps a little overwhelming. I want this to be an opportunity for you to step back, relax, and truly soak in this special experience. Think of it as a mini-retreat.
3. A Relaxing, Soothing Atmosphere: Beyond the baby’s comfort, the studio environment is crafted for your mental relaxation. Soft lighting, quiet music (if you like), and a calm ambiance allow you to simply be. Having a newborn, whether it’s your first or your fourth, is a wonderfully stressful journey. This session is your chance to pause, reflect, and enjoy seeing your baby celebrated.
4. More Than Just a Photographer – A Kindred Spirit: My background as a mum of three and my years as a nursery nurse mean I’ve heard it all, seen it all, and probably experienced most of it myself! I pride myself on creating a friendly, relatable, and cheerful atmosphere. We’ll chat about parenthood, share stories, and I’m always happy to share tips and tricks I’ve learned from my own children and the countless mums I’ve met over the years. This isn’t just a photoshoot; it’s a supportive, understanding space.
5. Mental Relaxation and Comfort: The psychological impact of a newborn photoshoot can be profound. When you feel comfortable and relaxed, your baby often senses this and remains more settled. My calm demeanour and experienced hands mean you can truly let go of your anxieties. This dedicated time, focused purely on your beautiful baby, provides a unique opportunity for new parents to con
